Portuguese Buns Productions
FESTA! played at the Portuguese Club of Vancouver as part of the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival

This is what people have to say about FESTA!

If you are Portuguese, don't miss this show. If you have a Portuguese friend, take them and watch them as much as you watch the show. If you're not Portuguese, this is a fun chance to peek inside someone else's culture and experience the amazing thing that happens when an audience has the rare opportunity to see themselves reflected. And there are Portuguese buns! ~ Morgan Brayton, Performer/Writer

Loved all the Portuguese and Portenglish (Penglish?), how our traditions hit life in Vancouver, the female perspective. While my family immigrated to California, much was the same- ("don't ever ever go out with wet hair", the "drives"). I'm still laughing about doing a "Canadian clean", "Canadian guys might help around the house more, but they need you to validate their feelings" and "I have my beers, you have your obituaries." This funny play is also a time capsule for when the Portuguese community weren't so spread out/or assimilated, and shows how hard it can be for people who came from villages/rural life to adjust to Vancouver. All of a sudden, there are 'strangers'...a poignant observation. It's wonderful to be able to enjoy Portuguese cuisine as part of the show. I loved seeing a woman in front of me, who kept waving her hand because she recognized her experience/life on stage.~ Elaine Avila, Playwright

The reference that rocked my world was to these little tiny raffle tickets you used to get; if the ticket had a number on it you would get a corresponding prize. The show did an excellent job of portraying Portuguese/Canadian culture. The performers summed things up best when they said Portuguese people come from a village from where they knew everyone and moved to a country where they knew no one. I called my sister the next day and told her about the show. We had a good laugh about the jokes, especially those damn raffle tickets. ~ Tony Correia, Author/Blogger Everything Tony Correia

What it means to be Portuguese Canadian: Medeiros says the timing is right to produce a story to speak to Portuguese-Canadians, particularly those who are first generation children of immigrants. “We (Cruz and Medeiros) are at that age, where we are straddling the two worlds and want to keep our culture and we’re not living at home anymore. We don’t have that influence [of culture and practice] from our parents anymore,” says Medeiros. Medeiros hopes the audience will feel a part of a Portuguese family during the performance of Festa. “The audience is invited to a Portuguese family dinner party. We want to make them feel like they’re really part of it,” says Medeiros.
She adds that arroz doce, a common Portuguese rice pudding made of sweet rice, egg, milk, lemon and cinnamon, will be served at Festa. ~Excerpt from The Source

We asked them what they loved most about growing up in a Portuguese family. “The food was always amazing! We have the ability to laugh and joke around, even when you don’t have much. Knowing that your family is fiercely protective and will always have your back. Portuguese families are tight knit and loving, even while driving you crazy!” Now getting back to the food, like many cultures, this is a big part of theirs and experiencing the food is an option while you watch Festa! ~ Excerpt from the blog I Live In East Van
